Professional
I am a licensed MFT located in Salem, Oregon. My private MFT and psychotherapy practice serves individuals, couples, and families, and is based on my integrative counseling approach which combines the disciplines of theology and psychology. I have constructed a new theory combining Attachment Theory (AT), Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy (EFT), Intersubjectivity Psychoanalysis (IS), Neurobiology (NB), and my own area of research: Image of God (IoG). EFT is the most researched form of couple’s therapy with an AT, Neuropsychology, and Gestalt base. IS is the current state-of-the-art, 5th-generation psychoanalysis focusing on two-person psychology.
As a psychotherapist who is also a Christian, I hold to the historical Christian view of two books: the Bible as the book of God’s redemption story, and Creation as the book of nature revealing God’s design. I see no contradiction between theology and psychology, but believe that solid, honest theology and psychology fit together. I am trained in research and find that research that is not politically driven can be trusted. In our current society’s debate about human sexuality and gender, for example, I have identified six crucial socio-psychological domains built upon the biological foundation as revealed in Genesis 2 and 3. Generally speaking, being informed by neuroscience, I find that our society is about 10-15 years behind research in its understanding of the human nature and experience, which results in a culture heavily influenced by a pop psychology that is in not research based.
Research
My own research is in the following areas: psychometric construction for therapy, counseling education, integrative theory construction, couple’s therapy, PTSD & trauma psychology, and psychology of the transpersonal other/unconscious image of God. My PhD dissertation research focused on an individual’s unconscious image of God and adult attachment styles. In the process of my dissertation research I constructed a new psychological theory to understand transpersonal domains. This hybrid theory became the Manock Integrative Method which now lies at the heart of ICI's clinical and pastoral counselor training programs. I am currently theoretically moving beyond the deconstructed Postmodernity’s scattered self-anthropology, to a reflected-angle image of God anthropology which is divine, dialectic, and dialogical. The latter incorporates the significant aspect of a relationship to the transpersonal with implications for clinical and pastoral work regarding gender and sexuality, relational psychology, and the religiosity and spirituality of the client. Based upon neuroscience, psychology can move beyond Western self-identity, self-worth, self-agency, self-efficacy, and self-autonomy to self-other worth, self-other identity, etc.
Education
My PhD is from Fuller Theological Seminary's School of Psychology in Pasadena, California. I also hold two master’s degrees: MS MFT and MDiv. I have been involved in higher education since 1999, having served as a full-time graduate professor at George Fox University and as the director of the Master of Arts of Counseling at Multnomah University. I also have been an adjunct professor at the following schools: Fuller Theological Seminary (School of Psychology), Azusa Pacific University, Western Oregon University, Corban University, New Hope Christian College, and the University of Western States. I am the founder and president of the Integrative Counseling Institute in Salem, Oregon, focusing on research, training, and supervision of post-graduate interns, pastoral counselors, and clinicians. ICI has served over 3000+ clients with some dozen counselors and therapists working through the clinic. I also conduct supervision training for licensed counselors & therapists who are training to become clinical supervisors, and offer executive coaching to business professionals, clinicians, pastors and pastoral counselors, helping them grow personally and professionally in their respective fields. I regularly share my research and insights at conferences for churches and the community, and conduct intensive seminars at ICI focused on training pastoral counselors to clinical standards and providing continuing education to clinicians and interns. I am an OBLPCT supervisor.
Shepherding
Beyond research and clinical work both as a pastoral counselor and a psychotherapist, I consider it a delight to be with people and to help them to grow in their walk with the LORD. As a shepherd I look for three things using a Biblical metaphor of walking: walking before the LORD (faith), walking after the LORD (obedience), and walking with the LORD (intimacy). It is a joy to see people grow in intimacy with Jesus and become fruitful light and salt in the world. I believe that God has called us in the New Covenant to partner with him to heal a broken world.
Personal
On a personal note, I have been married to my spouse, Brenda, since 1975. I was born and raised in Japan until the age of 9, the son of a Japanese woman and an American G.I. Ethnically I am Eurasian, with Japanese and Scandinavian as my heritage. At the age of 9 I was adopted by my American parents and spent my late childhood and adolescence in Salem, Oregon. As a high school graduate I received an athletic scholarship to the University of Oregon and competed as a NCAA varsity gymnast. I was drafted into the army during Vietnam, training as a medic. Brenda and I have been married since 1975. We are the parents of two children, Jonathan our son, and Maia our daughter. I see myself as a reserved introvert who has married a wonderful Italian who has pulled me out of my emotional cave. Bren received the LORD at her first Communion in her Catholic Church and I gave my heart to the LORD in 1968 at the University of Oregon through the Campus Crusade Ministry.
Pastoring
In 1975 I was ordained into the PCUSA. Since then I have served three Presbyterian churches and 4 interdenominational churches in the states of Washington, Oregon, and California. I have been a solo pastor, senior pastor, and an executive pastor in 3 mega churches. I value a team approach in ministry and see myself as a solid team player. Currently I am a teaching pastor at Salem Ekklesia which I founded with Dr. Michelle Cox in 2009. SE is a non-denominational, informal church with a focus on relationship. As part of its vision and mission Salem Ekklesia supports the Integrative Counseling Institute, though the two organizations remain separate. Salem Ekklesia subscribes to the doctrinal statement as reflected in the National Evangelical Association.

Hey Dr. Manock, what do you do in your free time?
My hobbies include golfing, jogging, watching foreign & Korean T.V. soap operas on Netflix and Kdrama while on my treadmill, and riding my BMW 1200RT. I have placed 145K miles on 3 BMW bikes and completed two "Iron Butt" rides which require riding 1000 miles in one day: Salt Lake City to Salem, and San Diego to Salem. These days, I primarily do long-distance motorcycle riding with three of my Baby Boomer boys––nice midlife crisis! So far, we have ridden throughout the West Coast, including Canada. My dream goal is to do a foursquare ride: Salem to L.A., L.A. to Florida, Florida to Maine, and Maine back to Salem. The best moments in my life are the quiet times I have with the LORD and date times with my dear wife of some 47 years.
